Musical Math Fluency

Equipment list

  • Index cards with math equations

  • Music player (e.g., computer, tablet, phone)

  • Speakers

Explanation

This lesson is a dynamic way to get students engaged in math while also incorporating physical activity. It’s designed to be flexible and can easily be tailored to different grade levels and content areas!

 To set up:

  • Prepare index cards with math fluency problems based on the specific math strategy you are focusing on (ensure all equations are different).

  • The teacher should have a song ready to play from their computer or device.

  • Students should find a spot in the room where they can move freely.

To play:

  • Similar to musical chairs, students walk around the room while the music plays. They can move however they feel comfortable, whether that’s walking, skipping, dancing, or even hopping.

  • When the music stops, students pair up with someone nearby. If there’s an odd number, groups of three can form.

  • In pairs, students take turns asking each other the math question on their index card. The partner answers and explains the strategy used to solve it.

  • The activity can continue for as long as desired.

Variations

  • The math problems on the index cards can be updated to reflect different learning outcomes or concepts.

  • Students can write their own equations on the index cards, or the teacher can pre-write them.

  • The movement style can be customized. For example, jumping like frogs, hopping on one foot, or even moving like animals, depending on what feels fun and energizing for the class.

  • This activity can be done indoors or outdoors, making it adaptable to various environments.
