Musical Heart Words
Equipment list
CVC Word Flashcards (consonant-vowel-consonant words)
Music player (phone, speaker, etc.)
Whiteboards and markers or paper and pencils
Explanation
This activity is a playful twist on musical chairs, designed to reinforce heart words (irregularly spelled high-frequency words).
Play music while students walk around the classroom. When the music stops, each student quickly finds the nearest flashcard. They read the word aloud and write it on their whiteboard or paper.
Repeat the process for several rounds, giving students the opportunity to encounter a variety of heart words. After the activity, invite students to share some of the words they collected. As a class, review pronunciation and spelling, and clarify any commonly misspelled or misread words.
Variations
Adjust time intervals depending on class energy or focus level (e.g., shorter rounds for higher energy).
Use themed word sets (e.g., seasonal words, sight words, rhyming words).
Partner version: students pair up to read and spell words together.
Progression
Begin with simple CVC words.
Gradually introduce more complex or irregular heart words.
Add a challenge by having students use the word in a sentence after writing it.
Incorporate movement-based spelling (e.g., students “air write” the word after reading it).
