Explanation
The Healthy Relay Race is a high-energy, team-based activity designed for Grade 4 students to explore concepts of physical, emotional, and mental health through movement and discussion.
Students form teams of four and take turns running through an obstacle course to retrieve health-related question strips.
Each question promotes discussion around wellness topics such as sleep, hygiene, digital safety, and emotional regulation. Once answered, the next teammate continues the relay.
At the end, a whole-class reflective discussion encourages students to share answers and consider how health choices affect well-being in different ways.
Example questions:
How does sleep help you stay healthy and learn better?
Is one hour of screen time a day healthy? Why or why not?
What’s a good way to solve a conflict with a friend during recess?
What’s the difference between a big problem and a small one?
Who can you turn to for support when you're feeling overwhelmed at school? And what about at home?
Should kids post personal photos or information online? Why or why not?
Is sleeping 15 hours every night good for kids your age? Explain.
What activities help you relax or clear your mind?
How can social media use become harmful?
Why is handwashing important before eating and after using the bathroom?
Variation / progression
1. Modify the questions for younger or older grades.
2. Add time challenges or bonus stations, for example, “Name one fruit while jumping rope”.
3. Use visual symbols for non-readers in earlier grades.
4. Add reflective journaling after the class discussion for deeper engagement.
Participant feedback:
Students became highly engaged due to the movement-based, hands-on approach. They appreciated the integration of physical activity and teamwork as they explored meaningful health discussions. Educators have noted an increase in participation, thoughtful contributions, and meaningful interactions among peers during group reflection sessions.
