Advanced Number Line Relay
Equipment list
Rope or string (to serve as the number line)
Tape (to secure the rope)
Numbered cards (bendable or foldable)
Explanation
Create a physical number line by tying a rope across two secure points in the classroom. Divide the class into four groups. Each group receives a pile of bendable numbered cards. One student from each group runs up, or moves in a manner of their choice, selects a number card, and places it accurately on the number line. The relay continues until all cards are placed.
Variations
Use decimals or fractions to increase difficulty.
Add place value blocks or visuals on cards for support.
Reverse relay: students remove cards in correct order.
Progression
Start with whole numbers only.
Gradually introduce negative numbers, decimals, and fractions.
Include time challenges or peer review for accuracy.
